Warning: The video below is incredibly graphic.
It’s a fear for many swimming near boats — getting a limb stuck in a propeller. While this injury is incredibly rare, the results of it can be life-changing or life-ending, with one study claiming that “approximately 10 percent to 15 percent of propeller injuries are fatal.”
Now, a video posted to the subreddit r/PublicFreakout shows, in highly graphic fashion, just how dangerous propellers can be.

According to The Sun, the incident took place in Sint Maarten in the Caribbean near Bobby's Marina in April of this year. “Police are still investigating the incident but they believe the victim had jumped into the water and tried to swim towards a water taxi that was docked at the pier, according to local media. But his foot got caught in the propeller when he tried to climb on board,” the article reads.
It’s unclear what the man’s current status is, but local media reported at the time that he was being treated at the hospital in critical but stable condition.
In the comments section, users shared their own propeller horror stories.
“Knew a guy who went out on a lake with his friends, jumped off the back of the boat. Propeller ripped his entire back open hip to neck. You could see his spine. He died within minutes,” wrote one. “Don’t fuck around near propellers.”
“Was just boating with family friends and heard the story of their close friend who got hit in the leg by the prop and bled out,” recalled another.
“I have lived my whole life beside the Okanagan lake that its both beautiful and dangerous. I can’t remember how many times I have had to pull stupids out of the lake (starting when I was 14); damaged; people I did not even know. We lose several every year. The cost of doing tourist business on my end of the world,” shared a third.
Experts obviously note that boat propellers should not be active when people are near them. Additionally, there are other safety precautions that should be in place for both boat drivers and passengers to prevent incidents like these from occurring. Oh, and if you ever see an injury like this in real life, for god’s sake, stop filming and help.
